What is Vanguardia Dance Projects?
Vanguardia Dance Projects is a Canadian - Latin American Collective created in 2010 by Norma Araiza and Olga Barrios with the purpose of promoting contemporary dance.
Vanguardia Dance Projects supports innovative artists that include other art disciplines pushing the boudaries of what is called 'contemporary'.There is always a constant search to express through different languages, with dance as the core of that expression.
Vanguardia aims to bring a greater awareness of Latin American contemporary dance works. When people hear about Latin dance or Latin American art in general, they tend to think of the mainstream ballroom dances or traditional/folkloric works coming form various parts of Latin America.
Vanguardia Dance Projects' main interest is the dissemination of contemporary artistic practice of dance artists of Latin American and Indigenous background in Canada, in conversation with the rest of the world.
On April, 2011, Vanguardia Dance Projects held its first contemporary dance theatre show at the Winchester Street Theatre in Toronto. The Evening of Latin American Dance brought together artists from Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, and Colombia. The dynamic audience that filled the house to capacity that evening were a diverse group of individuals who indicated a great interest to see more dance/theatre works in the future.
Vanguardia Dance Projects has a great opportunity to do so by taking part in the NEXTSTEPS Dance Series at the Studio Theatre at Harbourfront Centre. Please help them get there by making a donation!
